Chase City’s Historic District

The map of the Chase City Warehouse and Commercial Historic District.

Did you know that Chase City’s historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register?

The Chase City Warehouse and Commercial Historic District was added alongside other nationally recognized historic places, including Chase City High School, MacCallum More and Hudgins House Historic District, and Shadow Lawn.

Chase City can trace its roots to the 18th century, with explosive development happening in the late 19th century with the arrival of the railroad. Economic activity grew alongside tobacco, lumber, and other industries in the area, leading Chase City to be the biggest town in the region for several generations.

Composed of 27 acres, the historic district includes a number of warehouses and commercial buildings that contributed mightily to Chase City’s growth in the early-to-mid 20th century.

One significant advantage of the designation is that federal grants and tax provisions are available to building owners for redevelopment.
